Study and Evaluation
Year of Study: 2011

The project involved a building systems (plumbing, mechanical and electrical) evaluation and feasibility study of an existing two story, elementary school owned by Durham Public Schools located on 9th Street in Durham. The building consisted of the original 1926 construction along with 1966 and 1994 additions. The purpose of the study was to analyze and evaluate the existing plumbing, mechanical and electrical building systems for compliance with applicable state building and/or rehabilitation code requirements and to evaluate the building systems for the remaining useful service life and suitability of future reuse.

Design and Construction
Year of Construction: 2012
Project PME Budget: $2,213,000

The results of the study above resulted in minor refurbishments of the 1926 and 1966 buildings.
The plumbing consisted of replacing the plumbing fixtures, water lines and waste lines in all eight gang Toilets in the 1926 and 1966 buildings. New plumbing was also provided in a few single bathrooms including new fixtures, waste and water lines.
The HVAC work was very limited in scope. The HVAC coils were cleaned in approximately 100 existing fan coil units. The fan coil units in the Auditorium were replaced.
The electrical work consisted of new lighting and lighting controls in the 1926 and 1966 buildings. This included new interior emergency lighting as well as exterior emergency lights.
Seven panelboards were replaced due to the available fault current being exceeded and/or condition of the panels.
The existing hardwired fire alarm system was replaced with a new addressable fire alarm system with partial smoke detection
The existing Security system was upgraded with new motion detectors in the 1926, 1966 and 1994 buildings.

Bacon Street

Feasibility Study

The project involves a similar evaluation and feasibility study of an existing single story, approximately 95,000 square foot office/warehouse building owned by Durham Public Schools located on Bacon and Lawson Streets. The purpose of the studies is to analyze and evaluate the existing plumbing, mechanical and electrical building systems for compliance with applicable state building and/or rehabilitation code requirements, evaluate the building systems for the remaining useful service life and suitability of future reuse and to determine the feasibility of renovating portions of the building previously used as classrooms and training rooms to office use.

Durham School of the Arts

Addition and Renovation

Project involves HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical design for a 34,000 square foot addition.  Included in the scope are fire alarm and communication design (phone and data), lighting design for a 2500 square foot open connector,  connection of the Art Courtyard storm sewer piping, courtyard lighting and Construction Administration.

Carr Building Master Plan

Project included an investigation and condition assessment of the existing plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems in the Carr Building. An estimate of probable construction cost as it relates to the PME needs of the facility was provided  along with a written report of findings and suggestions related to the mechanical and electrical systems.

Githens Middle School
